Steel giant Corus is to close part of its Lackenby site by the end of January with the loss of 47 jobs.
But the move involving the hot-rolled steel decoiling operation is to be challenged by unions, who believe there is no need for job losses.
The cut-to-length sheet and plate section comes under the Distribution and Building Systems division and is serviced from Lackenby and Womborne, in the West Midlands.
The proposal involves the relocation of production from Lackenby to the existing Wombourne Service Centre and a new business that will be established at Dudley In a shock announcement the company said centralisation of its principal decoiling activities will allow Corus to be more flexible.
