Latest steel production figures from International Iron and Steel Institute

World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 104.131 million tons in May 2006, which is 9.3% higher than for the same month of 2005. The production during January to May 2006 amounted to 488.764 million tonnes an increase of 7% over corresponding period of 2005.

The growth during May 2006 among regions was led by Asia which registering growth of 13.1%. European Union (25), CIS and North America also registered positive growth of 8.7%, 6.8% and 4.1% respectively in May 2006. All other regions witnessed negative growth in May 2006

The crude steel production during January to May 2006 was led by Asia, which produced 254.608 million tonnes registering a growth of 12.6%. Other regions to have recorder positive growth include Other Europe Union(25), CIS, North America and Middle East.

Among the top 20 nations, China recorded 19.6% growth in crude steel production during May 2006.
