Nucor says it will build steel mill in the South

Nucor Corp., the second-biggest U.S. steelmaker, said it would build a mill in the South to produce metal used in car motors and heavy equipment. The new plant will be able to produce 850,000 tons of carbon and alloy sheets a year, Charlotte-based Nucor said. The company didn't specify where it will build or when construction will begin.Nucor has announced plans for three new plants this year, including a $150 million galvanized steel plant in Decatur, Ala., and a $27 million plant that will make pre-fabricated metal building systems and components at a site in the western U.S. that has yet to be disclosed.

More details about the company's plans for the new plant will be announced when Nucor reports second-quarter earnings on July 21, Chief Executive Daniel DiMicco said in a telephone interview.
