AS nearly 130 years of rail track production ends in Workington on Friday, Corus Rail steel mill opened its doors to the media for the last time yesterday.
A lack of space, and the call to centralise operations in Scunthorpe, has led to the closure of the site.
Customers – such as Network Rail – require tracks that are 120 metres long, but the Workington mill can only produce unwelded tracks of 40 metres.
Corus bosses say it would be too costly to extend the existing mill, because the site is sandwiched between the sea and Network Rail, making it impossible to expand.
