Steelmakers fear future stainless oversupply in US

ThyssenKrupps recent announcement of a project for a new steel plant in the USA has caused some concern amongst the existing producers. The plan (which is tied in to aquisition of Dofasco) could add some 4.5 million tons to the supply chain of which 1 million would be stainless.

Whilst the US producers are currently working “flat out” to meet demand, they fear the possible addition of a further 1 million tonnes to the stainless market. It is unlikely that steel consumers see it in the same light.
