AK Steel lockout is over

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - A piece of cardboard propped on a bench outside the union hall with "It's Over" hastily scrawled across it seemed to say it all. AK Steel workers were going back to work.

A nearly 13-month-old lockout ended Wednesday as union workers at AK Steel Holding Corp.'s Middletown Works plant overwhelmingly approved a contract offer by a vote of 1,275 to 226. The agreement, which goes into effect today and runs through September 2011, means some 1,750 union employees will be able to return to work at the plant 30 miles north of Cincinnati.

AK Steel makes flat-rolled carbon steel and stainless and electrical steel used in cars and appliances.
