Explosion sparks steel mill blaze

More than 70 firefighters have spent the night tackling a major blaze at the Corus steel plant in Scunthorpe after an explosion.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blast in a huge hydraulic roller used to roll steel in the plant's medium section mill.

Firefighters described it as a pressure explosion which caused oil to burst out and ignite an area about 100m by 50m.

The building was evacuated and nobody was injured, the fire service said.

Fire crews were called out late on Tuesday night and finally left in the early hours of Wednesday after spending six hours bringing the incident under control.
