Steel job losses at Corus Llanelli

Difficult market conditions were said to be behind the loss of nearly 100 jobs at Llanelli's Corus Steelworks last week. CHRIS HENWOOD asks what does the future hold for the Trostre plant?
Job worries and Llanelli seem to have gone hand in hand over the past few decades. A list of shattering closures and layoffs at the town's once-great employers trip off the tongue with disturbing ease.
There was Duport Steelworks, Buckley's Brewery, Llangennech MoD, Dura, Krupp Camford Pressings, Calsonic Kansei and Draka Wire, to name but a few.
Also, never far from the headlines with employment fears it would seem, has been Corus - formerly British Steel.
The plant, which processes steel for use in the food and drink industry, received its latest blow last week.
The announcement of 94 job losses at the site came as part of an effort to reduce costs and improve operational flexibility.
"We have an excellent record of improvement at Trostre, however we are experiencing very difficult market conditions," said Corus Packaging Plus works manager Stuart Wilkie.
