ArcelorMittal plans to shift some steel production from France to Poland

ArcelorMittal is planning to shift some steel production from its Gandrange site in eastern France, to Poland, according to union sources.
The steel producer is planning to transfer 1.3 mln tonnes of steel capacity from Gandrange, which is threatened with partial closure, to its Huta Warzawa site in Poland, which it bought in 2005 from Italy's Lucchini.
Union sources told Agence France-Presse the move is part of a "secret plan" by CEO Lakshmi Mittal.
The details of the plan were revealed by members of a Polish union at a European works council meeting held on Feb 15 in Luxembourg, the sources said.
The plan also includes transferring 300,000 tonnes from Gandrange to ArcelorMittal sites in Luxembourg and 1 mln tonnes to sites in Duisburg and Hamburg in Germany.
ArcelorMittal was not immediately available to comment.
