Calgary steel firm lays off 270 workers

A Calgary steelmaker handed out permanent layoff notices to about 270 workers in the city this week after a temporary shutdown in January.

TenarisPrudential, which makes steel pipes for the oil and gas industry, made the cuts this week, a union official confirmed Monday.

"We're down to a third of the work-force we had at the end of last year and it looks pretty gloomy,"said Wylie Craig, president of the United Steelworkers Local 7226.
