Mittal Steel USA has decided to locate its headquarters in downtown Chicago, not northwest Indiana as some economic development leaders there had hoped.The decision did not come as a surprise because Mittal Steel N.V. chairman Lakshmi Mittal had said over the summer that the company was leaning toward Chicago. The company’s new offices will be at 1 S. Dearborn St.
“I think the bigger picture was the pizzazz of being in Chicago for the world’s largest steel company,'’ said John Mang III, executive vice president, operations west. “It really came down to the corporate office in London really wanted Chicago because of the name and the pizzazz rather than East Chicago, Portage or northwest Indiana.”
The new offices will house about 200 employees.
Along with steel mills in northwest Indiana, Mittal also operates a mill in Riverdale.
