Steel unions may merge

Officials of the Independent Steelworkers Union will ask their 1,250 members to approve a proposed merger with the United Steelworkers through a mail-in ballot later this month. The votes will be tallied March 31.
The proposed merger agreement was unanimously approved Tuesday by the ISU five-member executive committee and by the 13-member steward body. General membership meetings on the merger are scheduled and, if approved, the 56-year-old ISU would join with the 850,000-member USW.
